What to Expect During a Beach Family Session: A Complete Guide

When it comes to family photo sessions, the beach offers a beautiful magical setting that adds warmth, natural beauty, and a super relaxed atmosphere to your photographs. Beach family sessions are such a memorable experience that is full of fun, laughter, and stunning photos. But if you’ve never done one before, it’s totally normal to have questions. What should we wear? How do we prepare for the shoot? What if the kids get cranky? I love shooting our sessions around the Gold Coast and Redcliffe coastal areas.

Here’s everything you need to know about what to expect during a beach family photo session with Lullaby Lane Photography.

The Location:

The beach is a photographer’s dream. From soft sandy shores to crashing waves, the ocean provides a beautiful backdrop that shifts with the light and weather. However, a beach also has its own unique set of considerations. At Lullaby Lane Photography, we have scouted beaches and have found the perfect beach locations to suit family and maternity photographs. The beaches I choose are located in and around the outskirts of the sunny Gold Coast and Redcliffe, these locations offer the perfect mix of sand, hills, rocks, greenery, city and ocean views. Considerations include:

  • Timing is Key: The best light for photos happens during the golden hour, this is the period shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. For families I find sunset sessions are the best! The soft, warm light at these times really do make your photos glow, reduces harsh shadows and those squinting eyes. Midday beach sessions can be super tricky due to the intensity of the sun, however here at Lullaby Lane Photography we do know how to work with all types of natural light.
  • Wind and Weather: Beaches are often windy, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Windswept hair and clothing can add an element of movement to your photos, but if it’s too gusty, it may not be ideal for everyone. The weather can change quickly by the coast, so be prepared for different conditions, I suggest you bring light jackets, cardigans or layers just in case.

Tidal Considerations: If you’re planning a session by the water’s edge, we do keep an eye on the tide. Some areas might have large tidal fluctuations, which can impact the timing and location of your shoot. We wwill generally plan your session time with this in mind.

What to Wear: Comfortable Yet Stylish

Clothing choices are a big part of how your family will look in the photos. Our goal is to strike the balance between style, comfort, and the natural beach vibe. Here are some tips:

  • Light, Natural Tones: The beach’s natural colours, sands, blues, and greens, work best with lighter, muted toned clothing choices. Think soft whites, pastels, soft blues, soft greens, grays, and even neutral earth tones. Avoid neon or overly bold colours, as they can be distracting and don’t blend well with the natural scenery.
  • Layers and Textures: Layers can help add depth to your photos. Think of light cardigans, scarves, or denim jackets. Textured fabrics like knit sweaters, linen, and cotton help create interest and give a natural feel that fits the beachy vibe.
  • Footwear: Many families choose to go barefoot during their beach session, which keeps things relaxed and natural. If that’s not comfortable for you, consider casual sandals or flip-flops, but avoid shoes that are too formal or heavy.
  • Avoid Patterns: While simple patterns (like subtle stripes or small checks) can and do work, avoid overly busy patterns or logos, as they can distract from the overall image. The focus should be on the family dynamic and the beautiful natural surroundings.

Expect Movement & Playfulness

Our beach session are one of the most laid-back types of photoshoots. Many families opt for a mix of posed and candid moments, and the beach’s relaxed vibe encourages natural playfulness. Here at Lullaby Lane Photography I let the children play after we are finished with our posed shots, I bring along many different props to encourage natural play and smiles.

  • Play and Interaction: Don’t be afraid to laugh, run, jump, or splash in the water! These moments of genuine connection often result in the most memorable and heartfelt photos. If you have children coming along, encourage them to explore, play in the sand and chase the waves. I will capture those candid moments when you’re not looking directly at the camera.
  • Action Shots: Some of the best family photos happen when you’re in motion. Whether it’s your family running down the beach or holding hands and strolling along the shore, these action shots capture the joy of being together. Depending on the tide and our guidance, you may be asked to go slightly into the water, run along the shore, or even play games together for extra fun.

Stay Relaxed and Have Fun

One of the key reasons families choose the beach for photos is the relaxed atmosphere. The natural beauty and open space encourages relaxed poses. I will guide you through the process, but the most important thing is to relax and enjoy the experience.

  • Don’t Worry About Perfection: Children might and usually do get distracted, your hair might get blown out of place by the wind and that’s okay! The beach is all about letting go and embracing spontaneity. Focus on enjoying the moment, and the pictures will reflect the love and connection within your family.
  • Bring Snacks or Distractions for Kids: If you’re bringing younger children, it’s always a good idea to have snacks or toys on hand to keep them engaged, especially if they need a break or moment to recharge. Here at Lullaby Lane Photography we know how to work around children’s natural attention spans to get the best results in the photographs.

Tips for Preparing for Your Session

Proper preparation can make all the difference in your beach session experience. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Sun Protection: Since you’ll likely be out in the sun for an extended period, make sure to apply sunscreen to protect your skin. Bring extra sunscreen for touch-ups during the shoot, especially if you’re planning a longer session or if your family tends to burn easily. Sunglasses are great for keeping your eyes shielded when you’re not in front of the camera, but be sure to take them off when it’s time for the photos.
  • Towels and Change of Clothes: Since you’ll be at the beach, there’s a chance someone might end up wet or sandy, especially if you’re playing by the water. Bring towels, wet wipes, and a change of clothes so you can freshen up after the photoshoot.
  • Hydration: Depending on the weather, beach sessions can be hot and draining. Keep water bottles on hand for everyone so no one gets too thirsty or uncomfortable.

Post-Session: What Happens Next

Once the session is over, the excitement isn’t quite over. I will typically take several days to edit the photos into a proofing gallery, this includes adjusting lighting, colour balance, and other minor touch ups to enhance the natural beauty of the beach.

Afterward, you’ll receive your edited images, in a password protected online gallery where you can choose the photos that I edit or if you have selected the all image package, you’ll be able to directly download and share your. Here at Lullaby Lane Photography we also offer prints, albums, canvas and many other products as well in our online print shop, these are great to gift to family members or hang up on those family walls ensuring that you can enjoy your beach memories for years to come.
